Wishaw and Cambusnethan Roll of Honour

Picture
Shortly after the end of the First World War, a number of "Peace Souvenir and Local War Record" books were published in the Lanarskhire area.

These recorded the war effort of specific communities, from fundraising and volunteering at home, to the efforts of local men serving in the armed forces.

While some of these publications were fairly brief in their detail of the men serving (for example Motherwell), others were more comprehensive, in some instances recording a complete list of those who served during wartime.

The edition for Wishaw and Cambusnethan parish is quite detailed, listing those men from Wishaw and surrounding villages - Craigneuk, Cambusnethan, Morningside, Overtown, Waterloo and Newmains among others. It listed not only those who lost their lives, but also those who had served and survived.

The detail include is fascinating - providing name, address, regiment and also details of those wounded, taken prisoner or awarded decorations for gallantry.

Today it is becoming harder and harder to find an original copy of the roll - some are in private hands, and some are in libraries.

The Scottish Military Research Group decided that this hard to find yet invaluable list deserved to be made available to a wider audience, and for that reason we are happy to offer a fully transcribed version of the original publication.

The full detail of the original is here - from the details of those in the area awarded the Victoria Cross, to the details of the war effort at home - raising funds, volunteering in hospitals. The main part of the transcription is of course the full listing of all from the communities who served

This transcription is offered here entirely free of charge and can be downloaded by clicking the box below.
