Welcome to the website of the Scottish Military Research Group, a registered charity with the purpose of educating and informing the public about how to research their Scottish military ancestors.
The Scottish Military Research Group formed as a charitable association in September 2011. We wanted to inform and educate the public about Scottish military history and help people research their military ancestors. Our work dates back further – to 2006 – when we first started the Scottish War Memorial Discussion Forum. Out of that grew the current Scottish Military Research Group Commemorations Project which has recorded thousands of Scottish war memorials and war graves across the world.
From administrating the SMRG Commemorations Project; to holding research open days; to keeping people up to date on news of Scottish military history online, daily, through our social media sites; the volunteers of the Scottish Military Research Group work in their spare time to share our passion and knowledge of Scotland’s military history with the world.
We are always looking for new volunteers and new information to share. Please visit the other pages of this website to see all the work we do and all the information we provide. If you think you can help us to share Scotland’s military history please get in touch.
As a small charity we have no regular funding or income. A founding principle of our association was that we would provide information on war memorials and war graves for free – to charge for information on war dead feels obscene – so we rely on the goodwill of the public to fund us. No-one in the SMRG is paid for what they do and all our funds are used to provide online services and resources for our activities. If you want to help us continue with our charitable work online and at open days please donate to us using the Paypal link below..
