Sunday 14th May saw another Open Day held at the Digging In trench at Pollok Park in Glasgow.
The theme for this Open Day was "Clay Kickers & Miners: The Underground War" - the Scots in the Great War Living History Society provided a visual element, and there were a number of speakers giving talks. We provided a small display covering the war underground, and which also featured several men who were involved in the tunnelling war. For those who couldn't make it on the day, you can download the display we mounted by clicking the link below, and view some of our pictures of the day in the Gallery.

Here's another new item we have added to our collection. The King's Badge, this was initially issued to servicemen in the Second World War who had been discharged as a result of injuries. It was also awarded to merchant navy and fishing fleets, coastguard, police, members of the Civil Defence Services and the Home Guard.
It's not clear how many were issued in total during the war, but over 8000 had been awarded by the end of 1941. Unlike the Silver War Badge awarded in the First World War, these badges were not numbered and cannot be linked to a specific individual, but if you find one of these belonging to a family member, it means they saw service in WW2. The Scottish Military Research Group will be holding another of their Open Days in conjunction with Glasgow Libraries at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, this Saturday, 19th November.
Volunteers from the SMRG, together with Libraries staff, will be on hold to assist you with starting your research, or helping to find that missing piece of the jigsaw. Whatever query you may have, come along and see if we can help. Volunteers from the Scots in the Great War Living History Group will also be on hand to show you just what the uniforms and kit from the First World War were like, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We will also have our "Stories from the Somme" display on show for you to browse. Everyone is welcome, no matter how large or small your query or question may be. The event runs from 11am until 3pm, and is being held in the Moir-Dyer-Simpson Suites on the Ground Floor. We look forward to seeing you there! |
